Bridgewater, NJ — The Somerset Patriots (60-37) lost to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (37-60) by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon, losing their second straight game to open their series at TD Bank Ballpark.
After losing the series opening game, Wednesday’s loss marked only the second time this season that the Patriots lost two straight games at home.
Somerset was shut out until the ninth inning, when Max Burt smacked an RBI-double that brought home Rodolfo Duran with the Patriots’ first run.
Michael Beltre later scored on a wild pitch that resulted in the Patriots’ second and final run.
Binghamton pitcher Jesus Vargas earned the win with six shutout innings of relief, where he allowed only one hit. Between the fourth and seventh innings, Vargas had retired 12 straight batters.
Somerset starter Randy Vasquez gave up three unearned runs in the third inning, resulting in his fourth losing decision of the season.
