A day after the emotional high from the Mets 5-4 win over the Dodgers, the Amazin's kept the good vibes going thanks to a historic evening from third baseman Eduardo Escobar, who became the 11th player in Mets history to hit for the cycle. It was a huge moment for Escobar who has struggled with the bat this season, hitting at .227 with three home runs and 12 RBI. He has been looking for that signature moment. He finally had it.
“This is a great moment. It's unbelievable,” the 33-year-old third baseman said. "It's hard hitting the cycle at this level. Today's a special night for me. Most important is the win.”
Escobar got his historic night started in the top of the first inning when he drove in Pete Alonso and Mark Canha to give the Mets an early 3-0 lead. Later, he led off the top of the fourth inning with a double and came around to score on a single by Brandon Nimmo to make it 4-1.
Come the eighth inning with New York leading 5-2, Escorbar crushed a two-run homer to right to make it 7-2. Finally in the ninth, he answered Luke Voit's three run blast for San Diego that cut the Mets lead down to 7-5, with a two-run triple off lefty reliever Tim Hill that bounced up against the wall in right.
Overall, Escobar finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI. His batting average shot up to .241 on the year, and now owns 24 RBI on the season.
The superlative efforts by Escobar was backed up by Mets starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco, who twirled seven solid innings where he allowed only two runs on five hits with ten strikeouts. Carrasco is now 7-1 on the season.
