“The big thing is we’re playing all these young guys and they’re getting valuable experience, and you’re never eliminated until you’re eliminated,” Head Coach Tom Thibodeau said. “So I don’t want a quitting spirit in our team.”
Yes, the Knicks aren’t eliminated yet. With eight games to go in the regular season, the Knicks stand at 34-42. They are ranked as the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference, some 4.5 games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the final play-in-game spot. The Cleveland Cavaliers (42-33), Brooklyn Nets (39-36), Charlotte Hornets (39-37), and Hawks (38-37) comprise of the four teams that will have to play a round-robin tournament in order to determine who the seventh and eighth seeds will be in the playoffs.
The Knicks, ironically, play the Hornets and Cavs in their next two games, and host the Nets on April 6. They would undoubtedly have to win out and hope that either Charlotte or Atlanta stumbles enough to even have a prayer of getting in. Hence the frustration Knicks fans must be feeling watching this team finally get it together at this late stage in the season.
Of course NOW the Knicks wanna go on a 4 game winning streak once it's too late. Against the Hornets, Heat, and Bulls too. My god. pic.twitter.com/MIEBOQnfeU
