After swinging and missing on free agent Freddie Freeman, who still hasn't signed anywhere, the Yankees pivoted to a player they are very familiar with to fill their void at first base: Anthony Rizzo.
The Yankees re-signed Rizzo to to a two-year, $32 million contract.
The deal makes a lot of sense. Since acquiring Rizzo at the trade deadline last summer, he proved to be an invaluable piece in the heart of the Yankees order providing much needed pop from the left side of the plate.
Overall, Rizzo played in 49 games with the Yankees in 2021, finishing with a .249/.340/,428 slash line, eight homers and 21 RBI. Rizzo, of course, made his bones playing with the Chicago Cubs, with whom he won a World Series with in 2016.
With Rizzo back in the fold in the Bronx, it will be fascinating to see what the Yankees do with Luke Voit, who could become expendable via trade.
