RUTGERS 6 - NEW MEXICO STATE 3

A solo home run in the top of the first inning by Payton Lincavage was just the beginning of a huge afternoon for Scarlet Knights softball, as the women topped New Mexico State 6-3 to finish off the ASU/GCU Classic in Phoenix with a record of 3-2.

The victory moved Rutgers to 16-9 on the season, doubling their win total from just a year ago.

Gabrielle Callaway had a huge afternoon for Rutgers, going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI. Her two-run single in the top of the third inning propelled Rutgers to a 4-0 lead, in an inning where the Scarlet Knights plated four runs. Kyleigh Sand and Taylor Fawcett also had RBI in the third inning for Rutgers.

Callaway would homer in the seventh inning, a solo shot, that pushed Rutgers to a 6-2 advantage.

Jaden Vickers allowed a pair of runs on three hits over three innings of work. She got a no-decision. Picking up the victory was Ashley Hitchock, who twirled four innings of one-run ball for RU.

The victory over New Mexico State turned out to be a sweep of the Aggies. Rutgers beat New Mexico State 11-7 on Saturday with Fawcett having a huge day going 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.

On Friday, Rutgers edged out Grand Canyon 4-1, with Maddie Lawson providing a three-run homer to blow the game wide open.
