After a nine day break the New Jersey Devils came out swinging against their rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins last night, thumping the Pens to the tune of 6-1 to capture Jersey's first victory since February 10 in St. Louis.
The Devs were led by a pair of goals by Jesper Bratt, who tapped in the first two goals of the contest in the first period to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. Yegor Sharangovich scored his 11th goal of the season at the 6:44 mark of the period to make it 3-0.
The loss for Pittsburgh marked it's third straight as they stand at 31-14-8, and are now in third place in the Metro division behind the Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes.
Speaking of the Rangers, they must have loved the Devils win over Pittsburgh, because they took care of the Washington Capitals, 4-1 for their fifth win in their last six games.
Alexis Lafrenière and Mike Zibanejad each had a goal and an assist as the Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead through two periods. Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow also tallied goals for the Blue Shirts. Igor Shesterkin had another huge night in net, recording 36 saves.
Finally, maybe it was the late night, but the Islanders couldn't keep pace with the Sharks, falling 4-3 in a shootout over in San Jose. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for San Jose.
Brock Nelson gave New York a 1-0 lead, but that was quickly expunged when Alexander Barabanov and Jasper Weatherby responded with goals of their own in the first period to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead.
The Isles would tie the game twice, first on a goal by Zach Parise a little less than eight minutes into the second period, and again by Adam Pelech to knott it up at three at the end of the second period.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game came down to a shootout.
Sharks goalie James Reimer did an outstanding job blocking shot by Anthony Beauvillier and Nelson. Mathew Barzal missed a chance to tie the shootout when he shot went wide. San Jose's Logan Couture scored the only goal of the shootout as the Sharks came away victorious 4-3.
