GEORGIA 33 - ALABAMA 18
Since leaving his mentor Nick Saban and the comforts of Tuscaloosa, Alabama to become the head coach at his alma marter, Georgia, Kirby Smart had yet to be Alabama. In four attempts against the SEC rival, Smart's Georgia Bulldogs were 0-4, including losing the National Championship in 2018, and losing the SEC title this year.
That all changed Monday night as Georgia stunned the Crimson Tide 33-18, knocking off their bitter rival and capturing the program's first National title in 41 years.
For most of the night the game was a low-scoring tug-of-war, with Georgia clinging to a 13-12 lead as the fourth quarter started. Alabama grabbed an 18-13 lead on a Cameron Lafu three-yard run with 10:14 to go. From there it was all Georgia.
The Bulldogs grabbed the momentum right back when quarterback Stetson Bennett hit receiver Adonai Mitchell on a 40-yard sprint to the end zone to give Georgia a 19-18 lead.
After Alabama went three-and-out on its next possessions, Georgia tacked on when Brock Bowers caught a 15-yard pass from Bennett for a score to push the Bulldogs out front 26-18.
The nail in the coffin came on Alabama's next possession when Kelee Ringo picked off Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, and brought it back to the house for a 79-yard touchdown with 0:33 to go in the game.
