Rutgers Football Names New Defensive Coordinator and D-Line Coach
Changes keep coming for Rutgers football in the early stages of the 2021-22 off-season. On Friday the program announced the hiring of Joe Harasymiak as Defensive Coordinator and Marquise Watson as Defensive Line Coach.
“Joe is one of the rising stars in our profession,” Head Coach Greg Schiano told Scarletknights.com. “It is great to bring Joe back to New Jersey, where I can’t wait to watch him coach and develop our players both on and off the field. We welcome Joe, his wife Brittany and daughters Sophie and Ellie to the Rutgers Football Family.”
Haraysymiak spent the past four seasons on the staff of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, mostly as co-Defensive Coordinator.
Haraysmiak, who hails from Waldwick, New Jersey in Bergen County, was the Head Coach at Maine from 2016-2018 where he compiled a record of 20-15 over three seasons. Before earning the promotion to Head Coach, Haraysmiak was the defensive backs coach and linebackers coach from 2012-2015.
He got his start in coaching with Maine Maritime Academy in 2008 before becoming a graduate assistant the following year with Springfield.
As for Marquise Watson, he spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach and Senior Analyst with Ole Miss.
According to scarletknights.com, “The defense ranked 23rd nationally and fourth in the SEC with 2.92 sacks per game. In 2020, Watson worked as a graduate assistant on the defensive side, being promoted to interim defensive line coach for Ole Miss’ victory over Indiana in the Outback Bowl. Watson was selected to the 247Sports 30-Under-30 (Sept. 2020) indicative of the top 30 college football assistant coaches under the age of 30.”
Schiano added, “Marquise is a great addition to the Rutgers Football Family,” Schiano said. “Already familiar with the area, Marquise will hit the ground running and play a big role in developing our players on the defensive line. He is one of the top young coaches in college football today.”
