Virginia Tech Sporting “Yankees” logo on Helmets in Pinstripe Bowl
They may not have produced the results they would have liked in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl, but Virginia Tech wore a sweet New York Yankees interlocking ‘NY’ logo decal on the right side of their helmets in a 54-10 loss at the hands of Maryland at Yankee Stadium, Wednesday afternoon.
The Yankees have a longstanding relationship with the University that dates back to 2008 when the Yankees stopped in Blacksburg before Opening Day of that season to play the Hokies baseball team in an exhibition game before 1,000-plus fans. The trip was a community service for the Yankees, who were looking to help the students and staff heal from the tragic Virginia Tech shooting that took place on April 16, 2007, when 32 people were gunned down by a madman.
The Yankees also donated $1 million to the Hokies Spirit Memorial Fund back in 2007.
When the Yankees made their trip to Virginia Tech, the Hokies donned Maroon and Mustard Yankees caps during the exhibition game.
As for the 2021 football helmets at the Pinstripe Bowl? They were pretty sick. A sleek maroon helmet with the iconic ‘VT’ logo on the left side of the helmet and the white interlocking ‘NY’ outlined in mustard gold on the right side of the helmet. It was a thing of beauty.

As for the game itself, the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl was a lopsided affair, all in favor of Maryland, who finished the season at 7-6.
Tauila Tagovailoa, who was a handful for Rutgers to deal with last month in the regular season finale, was impossible to contain against Virginia Tech. He completed 20-of-24 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns, and even ran for 42 yards on four carries. Both touchdown passes went to Darryl Jones, who had 111 yards receiving on the day for Maryland.
The Terrapins also got rushing touchdowns from Antwaine Littleton II, Colby McDonald and Roman Hemby.
Things started inauspiciously for Virginia Tech when Tarheeb Still brought back a punt 92-yards for the first touchdown of the day just three-and-a half minutes into the ballgame, handing Maryland a 7-0 lead.
Virginia Tech would get as close as 21-10 when Connor Blumrick scored on a three-yard plunge to cap off a 75-yard drive that ate up 5:11 off the clock.
It was all Maryland after that as the Terrapins scored 33-unanswered points the rest of the way.
