Rutgers women’s Basketball Drops Under .500 After Loss to Pitt
Pittsburgh 58 – Rutgers 50
Rutgers Women’s Basketball dropped under .500 for the first time this season after a frustrating 58-50 loss on the road to Pittsburgh, Wednesday. It marks the first time Rutgers has been under .500 this early into a season since the 2016-17 season. At 4-5, Rutgers has lost five of its last six games. They open Big 10 play on Sunday against Maryland.
“I thought the rebounding was the difference down the stretch. We gave up a couple of offensive rebounds. When we could have put it away, we didn’t rebound,” Acting Head Coach Timothy Eatman stated after the contest.
Rutgers led by as many as 10-points, 26-16 with three minutes to go in the second quarter, before Pittsburgh woke up offensively, hitting shots and extending possessions. Less than a minute into the third quarter, Pitt tied the game at 26 on a jumper by Jayla Everett. Amber Brown put Pitt in front 28-26 after nailing a couple of free throws.
Both teams would exchange leads throughout the second half, until Rutgers went cold offensively in the final three minutes as Pitt stormed off on an 8-0 run in the final two and a half minutes, thanks in part to fouls by Rutgers and a half dozen Pitt rebounds down the stretch.
Shug Dickson led Rutgers with 10 points and six rebounds. Three players were in double figures for Pitt, including: Jayla Everett with 18 points, Amber Brown with 12 points and Liatu King with 11 points.
