The eighth annual Game Awards have released its nominations for important categories like Game of The Year and Best Multiplayer, even showing love to the Esports community with five of the thirty total categories. So, what’s at stake this year and who is contending? 

The Game of The Year award which has fierce competition between titles such as the horror title ‘Resident Evil Village’ and the more puzzle driven title ‘It Takes Two.’ Both games, as well as the other nominations, like the action adventure ‘Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart’ are titans in their own right, but after all is said and done there can be only one Game of The Year. 

However, that’s not the only category that has fans debating as Esports has categories such as; Best Esports Athlete, Best Esports Event, Best Esports Game. All of which have fans thinking critically about their choice. For Best Esports Athlete the nominations all of skilled warriors with players like Heo “Showmaker” Su, a skilled player for the League of Legends team DWG KIA. As well as Magomed “Collapse” Khalilov, who helped bring his team to victory in the Dota 2021 International. But we also see players from Counter-Strike and Call of Duty appearing like Oleksandr “S1mple” Kostyliev, and retired player Tyson “Tenz” Ngo. and a popular name of Atlanta Faze’s own Chris “Simp” Lehr.  

One of the Esports Events of The Year nominations has gamers confused as PubG Mobile Championship tries to steal the spotlight from FPS games like Valorant and Counter-Strike. If chosen, it would be the first Mobile Game to win the award, taking the title from League of Legends, which has held the title for all three years the category has been available. However, the 2020 PubG Mobile Global Championship, was a massive success with a peak viewership of 3.4 Million and this year the prize pool saw a massive increase from 2 million to 6 million USD.

The 2021 Game Awards airs live and free on Thursday, December 9 at 8:30 PM ET / 5:30 PM PT. The show AIRS across all major digital, social and gaming platforms around the world.
