Women’s Basketball’s 3-0 Start Halted by Stony Brook
Rutgers women’s basketball is no longer unbeaten. A rough afternoon that saw the Scarlet Knights shoot only 26 percent from the floor, Rutgers dropped its first game of the year 53-44 to Stony Brook. For Stony Brook it was only their second win all time against a Big 10 opponent.
While Rutgers did a great job on the boards, out-rebounding Stony Brook 42-27, Stony Brook made it count by dropping three pointers in key spots to sink RU. None bigger than Anastasia Warren, who hit on two huge three’s for the Seawolves, the first coming with 5:44 to go in the contest to give Stony Brook a 45-37 lead. The second came with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter to expand the Seawolves lead to 11.
Warren was 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, (3-of-6 from downtown) for Stony Brook, leading her team with 15 points.
Lasha Petree, led all Rutgers scorers with 15 points of her own. Petree connected on 3-of-5 from downtown, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Osh Brown had another solid effort defensively, snaring eight rebounds, while contributing six points on 3-of-6 shooting.
Rutgers held a 21-19 lead over Stony Brook going into halftime. Petree’s three pointer gave Rutgers a 19-16 lead with 0:57 second to go in the half. That was quickly answered by a three ball by Kelis Corley to knot it up at 19. Jailyn Mason gave RU the halftime edge on a layup with 16 seconds to go.
The second half was all Stony Brook.
The Seawolves shot 43 percent from the floor in the second half (10-of-23), including 4-of-10 from beyond the arch. Rutgers shooting went cold in the second half, as Rutgers managed only two three-pointers on seven attempts.
Rutgers will look to rebound on Friday night when they play host to Harvard from the Jersey Mike’s Arena at 7 p.m. Catch the action on Fox Sports New Jersey.
