Jersey Native Carli Lloyd Calls it a Career
New Jersey native and Rutgers University grad Carli Lloyd is retiring from the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team.
“It’s been emotional. But there’s just a sense of peace and contentment that I feel — it’s just joy and happiness,” Lloyd said. “It’s been an amazing journey and I gave it all I had, and now I can walk away into the next chapter.”
Lloyd was a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2008 and 2012), two time FIFA Player of the Year, (2015 and ’16) and four-time Olympian. She played internationally for team USA since 2008, and has a professional soccer career that dates back to 2009. She played at Rutgers from 2001-2004.

Lloyd, 39, ranks second in the world for most-ever international appearances after having played in 315 career games. She has scored 134 goals with the U.S., third most in the history of the women’s team.
She didn’t score in her final game, a 6-0 win over South Korea in St. Paul, Minnesota, but her career was celebrated by teammates and fans during the contest. She left the game in 66th minute to a standing ovation.
