DEVILS 4 - KRAKEN 2

The NHL's newest team got a taste of Jersey last night, as the New Jersey Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead, en route to a thrilling 4-2 victory that sent the Devs to a 2-0 start. Seattle is 1-3-1 as they head back to Seattle for the franchises first home opener.

Rookie Dawson Mercer and Damon Stephenson scored first period goals for Jersey within the opening six and a half minutes.

For Mercer it was his first goal as a professional, which pleased head coach Lindy Ruff.

“I'm really happy he got his first goal. He took advantage of a great play," Ruff said. ”He’s a very competitive young man. He likes playing the game."

After Riley Sheahan scored for Seattle with 10:02 to go in the second period, New Jersey answered right back when Jimmy Vesey slipped the puck into the net some four minutes later to give Jersey a 3-1 advantage.

Jonathan Bernier was excellent in net for the Devils, recording 27 saves.

The Devils host the Capitals on Thursday night.
